Birgit Schwenzer is a program director in the Division of Materials Research (DMR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). She started at NSF in 2016 as a rotator and is now a permanent program director for the Solid State and Materials Chemistry (SSMC) program. Before she joined NSF, Dr. Schwenzer was a senior scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA. Her research background includes synthesis and characterization of inorganic structures, composite materials, and organometallic compounds predominantly for optoelectronic, or energy conversion and storage applications. She has extensive experience in structure-property relationship investigations for inorganic materials. Prior to joining NSF, Dr. Schwenzer also worked part-time as an associate technical editor for the MRS Bulletin and a volunteer science writer for the same publication.
