Timothy Long

Dr. Long is a Professor of Chemistry at Virginia Tech and Director of the University’s Macromolecules Innovation Institute (MII), which is located within the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS). He spent nearly a decade as a research scientist at Eastman Kodak Company and Eastman Chemical Company before returning to Virginia Tech, where he earned his Ph.D. He has more than 50 patents in the field of macromolecular science and engineering, and 240+ peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Long maintains a vigorous partnership with diverse industries, focusing on novel macromolecular structure to tailor properties and processing. Research interests include block copolymer elastomers, bio-based polymers, and tailored materials for additive manufacturing. He works with a 17-member interdisciplinary research group and has been awarded ~ $50M in research funding over the past 18 years at Virginia Tech. He currently serves as Director of MII, which boasts an internationally recognized polymer program of more than 70 affiliated faculty and 130 graduate students involved in diverse areas of polymer science and engineering. His research awards include the 2015 Virginia Scientist of the Year, 2012 ACS POLY Mark Scholar Award, 2010 Alumni Research Award.
