Time: 12:00PM - 01:30PM

You must be registered to participate!

Communication is powerful. The language we use and the way we communicate has an impact on who gets centered in science. Are our communications drawing the audience in or creating unintended barriers? During this presentation, we will share tools and actionable steps that each person can take in their professional and volunteer roles to make the broader scientific community more inclusive and welcoming of everyone. Topics include inclusive communication strategies and their impact, accessibility of in-person events, and how to make content such as journal articles, web pages, and other communications more accessible to persons with disabilities.

MRS and ACS are collaborating to share information, tips and tools from the ACS Inclusivity Style Guide created by the ACS Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR), which is committed to empowering everyone, irrespective of lived experience, to fully participate in the chemistry enterprise. The unit is the central hub that coordinates, supports, and guides all efforts by ACS staff, members, and governance toward strategic plan goal 5, “Embrace and Advance Inclusion in Chemistry.” The Office of DEIR helps to fully realize the core value of DEIR in ACS’s organizational culture as well as its products, programs, and services so that everyone in the chemistry enterprise can thrive.

The MRS DEI Aspiration is to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by actively engaging our diverse global membership, supporting the careers of underrepresented researchers, and investing in community actions to address bias and end inequities.
