Additive Manufacturing is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies. It is especially attractive to easily form optimized and customized parts that are otherwise prohibitively expensive. One can also fine tune material properties of the manufactured part and create objects with functionally graded materials. Additive Manufacturing has seen tremendous strides over the past decade and more in many application areas. There has been much academic research in the field as well as industry based focused research and development. The talks in this joint presentation will overview the current state of the art of Additive Manufacturing research and development from a materials focus in both academia and industry by some of the top researchers in the field.
