Tutorial G: Integrating Biomaterials into Organic Electronics and Interfacing Organic Electronics with Biological Systems<br />Part 1: Organic Bioelectronic Devices to Record and Regulate Functions in Cells

Dec 2, 2013 8:30am ‐ Dec 2, 2013 12:00pm

Identification: TG.01

Part I of the tutorial focused on utilizing electrochemical devices, which convert electronic addressing signals into chemical signal substances, in order to regulate the functions and physiology of cells and tissues. The prime devices to achieve such regulation are the ionic resistor, diode and transistor-based on polyelectrolytes and PEDOT. Such iontronics were described in detail, including how they have been applied to various biological systems for precise control of physiology. The tutorial initially reviewed the field of organic bioelectronics; the devices utilized and application targets chosen.

Part II of the tutorial described the chemical structure of electronically and ionically active materials that are of interest for integrating inorganic metal and semiconductor components with soft living tissue. The use of electrochemical deposition and characterization methods were discussed, as well as techniques for examining the physical, chemical and morphological details of these materials. Examples of their utility in a variety of current biomedical devices were described, including applications that involve both tissue stimulation and recording.
