Polymer-based materials offer a vast and enormously flexible platform to provide, receive and respond to signals from their environment; and the impressive progresses in this field include their use to respond to individual or combined chemical, biological and physical stimuli. In particular, there is an increasing demand for intelligent (self-regulating) materials that integrate multiple functions in their performance. Such multifunctional materials often feature hybrid structures (e.g., [nano]composites, blends, fibrillar or multilayer constructs); and distinct phases separately or synergically contribute to the overall responsive performance, which is further enhanced by the possibility of a hierarchical organization of the structural constituents at various length scales (molecular, nano-, micro-).

More than 80% of current world energy is generated by burning fossil fuels and more than 60% of this energy is wasted in the format of heat. Converting waste heat into electricity based on thermoelectric (TE) devices/systems is of great interest due to their simplicity, reliability and environmentally benign features.

Recent research trends have been focused on exploring new mechanisms and materials to enhance ZT beyond two, developing high-ZT and cost-effective thermoelectric materials, and exploiting thermoelectric devices for energy harvesting applications. In this symposium, the challenges and opportunities related to these efforts will be presented. Interdisciplinary topics related to physics, materials science and engineering will be connected by invited talks in order to accelerate the development of these materials toward applications.

Material research and development in such diverse areas as health care, environmental protection and resource sustainability often have a common theme: the assembly and disassembly of a hard (often crystalline) phase in the presence of soft tissues or organic molecules. For example, this holds for bone, tooth, shell and skeleton formation in marine organisms; and for novel material systems targeting oil recovery or soil remediation. It becomes increasingly clear that this overarching theme calls for a thorough understanding of the nucleation and growth mechanisms involved, their driving forces and stabilities, the role of transient amorphous phases and the resulting macroscopic properties such as fracture toughness and chemical resilience.

Tutorial L: Metamaterials and Plasmonics - From Fundamentals to Applications

Nov 30, 2014 8:30am ‐ Nov 30, 2014 5:00pm

Identification: TUT.01

  • David Smith will provide an overview of the physics and development of metamaterials. The rapid growth of metamaterials has shown how detrimental material absorption and losses can be, rendering most of these blockbuster experiments impractical as routes for competitive devices or practical applications. The presentation will explore alternative applications and phenomena for optical metamaterials which provide a far more promising path to practicality. In particular, optical metamaterials that exploit surface plasmons can dramatically enhance optical fields and form the platform for novel and advantageous absorbing or nonlinear optical media, as well as new and reconfigurable diffractive optics. This segment will focus on those configurations that provide useful functionality while mitigating losses and other deleterious properties.
  • Shuang Zhang will discuss metasurfaces, which consist of a monolayer of plasmonic structures capable of arbitrarily controlling the wave front of light. Metasurfaces show great promises for bridging the gap between the fundamental research of the artificial structures and the real-world applications. Compared to bulky 3D metamaterials, the ultrathin nature of the metasurfaces significantly eases the fabrication procedures, meanwhile bypassing the loss issue. This segment will review the recent development in metasurfaces with an emphasis on the design of the metasurfaces and some novel metasurface-based photonic devices. The presentation will explore the concept of phase discontinuity and wave-front control using metasurfaces, the interesting physics enabled by metasurfaces, and novel photonic devices based on metasurfaces including ultrathin flat lenses, broadband phase plates, switchable surface plasmon couplers, and high-definition 3D holograms.
  • Harry Atwater will outline plasmonics fundamentals including modal confinement and dispersion relations for guided wave and resonant structures, which lead to important applications such as sub-wavelength optical devices, and sensing and energy harvesting based on metallic nanoparticles. New directions for plasmonics by examining the relationship between plasmon modes and active elements will be presented. Active tuning of the complex refractive index in devices by optical pumping, electro-optic tuning or field-effect modulation of the electron density enables active devices to be realized. The presentation will offer examples in chip-based waveguide plasmonic devices comprised of noble metal materials and also structures based on plasmonic modes in 2D materials such as graphene. Opportunities to observe quantum coherent states in plasmonic structures will be discussed, showing how plasmonic structures enable entanglement or coherent superposition states of single plasmons in chip-based plasmonic devices.
  • David Miller will discuss the requirements and opportunities for nanophotonics in information processing. Optical interconnects will need to play a critical role if information processing technology is to continue to scale, because they offer the possibility of reducing energy per bit and increasing density in communications To exploit this opportunity, advanced, integrated, compact, low-energy optics and optoelectronics are required. Various micro- and nano-photonic technologies including plasmonics and metamaterials offer new technology approaches. Metallic optical devices offer the unique opportunity of subwavelength manipulation and concentration of light into and out of optoelectronics, but face the challenge of loss, which can substantially increase operating energy. Therefore, other approaches such as dielectric structures remain competitive. Recently, there has been growing progress in devices optimally designed to perform arbitrary desired optical functions, such as mode separation, and in self-configuring and self-optimizing optics, all of which extend what nanophotonics generally could offer. Such concepts promise new possibilities in metallic and dielectric approaches to highly functional optical systems for interconnects and other applications. This concluding presentation will discuss both the requirements of such optical and optoelectronic devices and the possibilities and opportunities for these various novel approaches.

Tutorial K: Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Graphene

Nov 30, 2014 8:30am ‐ Nov 30, 2014 5:00pm

Identification: TUT.02

  • Mauricio Terrones: This tutorial will begin with a discussion of the historical facts of layered materials and will describe graphite and graphene. Definitions of graphenes will be introduced as well as the importance of defects in graphene and other layered structures. The synthesis methods of graphene will be explored, as well as the preparation of 3-dimensional scaffolds using graphene sheets. Other hybrid carbon materials with graphene, nanotubes and fullerenes will be described. Regarding other 2-dimensional systems, an introduction to BN and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) will be presented. The electronic and optical properties as a function of layers (down to a monolayer) will also be reviewed. Various synthetic approaches and the growth of single crystal monolayers, hybrid heterolayers and van der Waals solids will be introduced. Raman spectroscopic modes and photoluminescence properties in all these systems will be discussed as the number of layers increases from a monolayer to the bulk. In conclusion, some applications of all the materials described above will be presented and the perspectives in the field will be provided.
  • Christian Kisielowski: This presentation will review the properties of graphene and discuss the chemical modification strategies that can be used to control these properties. Graphene’s amazing mechanical, electrical, catalytic and possible biological properties have led to a frenzied level of research activity, uncovering significant improvements in those properties or in composite materials containing it. This level of activity has encountered challenges centered around the fabrication of graphene-containing devices. Chemistries, protocols and fabrication equipment need to be developed in order to enable the realization of devices. The graphene structures contained therein must retain at least some of the wonderful properties uncovered in the nanoworld. The presentation will also evaluate the parallel requirements of chemical modification to enable the rheological properties needed for many fabrication approaches, including fiber spinning and 2D/3D printing. Examples of devices in development for energy conversion (solar and themoelectrochemical cells) and storage (flexible batteries and capacitors), as well as biomedical applications to highlight the challenges, will be reviewed. All the answers are not yet known; there are compromises to confront. The tutorial will stimulate discussion and debate to discern possible paths forward.
  • David Officer: The presentation addresses investigations of graphene using aberration-corrected electron microscopy in scanning and broad beam modes. In recent years, a rich variety of two-dimensional materials is under investigation because of the unique physical properties. Among them, graphene stands out because of its outstanding mechanical strength and electronic properties. Since it consists of a single layer of carbon atom, challenging experimental investigations are probing for structural, optical and electronic properties.
  • Allan MacDonald: Graphene is a remarkably simple and robust two-dimensional material. This presentation will briefly review the electronic structure and the optical and transport properties of single- and few-layer graphene sheets, and then discuss the unusual many-electron physics which can be hosted by these materials.

Tutorial T: Fundamentals of Wide-Bandgap Materials and Devices for Optoelectronics and Power Electronics

Nov 30, 2014 8:30am ‐ Nov 30, 2014 5:00pm

Identification: TUT.05

  • Victor Veliadis: The opening segment of the tutorial will outline the advantages of SiC over conventional power electronics materials and will introduce the SiC devices currently developed for power applications. Aspects of fabrication of SiC devices will be presented with an emphasis on the processes that do not carry over from the mature Si power device world, and are thus tailored to SiC. Common SiC device edge termination techniques, which are crucial in achieving the high voltage-potential of SiC, will be presented. Fabrication yields and wafer parameter uniformity will be discussed in relation to manufacturability. The materials and processing challenges of fabricating large-area SiC devices will be outlined and an exemplary wafer interconnection technique will be described. Thermal performance of SiC devices will be presented. Reliability of SiC devices will be reported, focusing on hard switching and unclamped inductive load testing.
  • Matteo Meneghini: Over the last few years, GaN-based High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) have demonstrated excellent performance in terms of on-resistance and breakdown voltage. Moreover, these devices can reach very high switching frequencies (>40 MHz) and can therefore be used for the fabrication of high efficiency power conversion systems; converters with efficiencies in excess of 99% have already been demonstrated, thus supporting the superiority of GaN with respect to conventional technologies. However, several factors still limit the performance and the lifetime of these devices. The tutorial will describe the fundamentals of GaN-based power transistors, as well as the physical mechanisms that limit their performance and reliability.
  • Hiroshi Amano: This segment will cover a wide range of material and device topics related to III-N-based optoelectronics. An overview will present the III-N optoelectronics market view, the history of the development of nitride-based optoelectronics, and the fundamental electrical and optical properties of nitrides. Next, key elements of the growth of nitrides by MOVPE will be covered, including thermodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, quantum chemical analysis, growth on various substrates (sapphire, Si, SiC, GaN), and in-situ monitoring of the growth process. Crystal characterization, device fabrication processes, and performance-determining processes will be covered next. The tutorial will conclude by reviewing the present status and future trends of nitride-based optoelectronics, covering the following topics: Visible long wavelength LEDs, deep UV LEDs, laser diodes, photodetectors and photovoltaics.

Tutorial FF: Materials for Sustainable Development

Nov 30, 2014 1:00pm ‐ Nov 30, 2014 5:00pm

Identification: TUT.06

  • Martin L. Green will address the topic of Materials for Sustainable Development which lies at the intersection of materials science, engineering, and sustainability. This topic is characterized by: enormous materials and energy scales (Gigatons and Terajoules); complexity requiring a system-wide approach involving the input of scientists, industrial ecologists, engineers, economists, sociologists, and public policy experts; the use of life cycle assessment (LCA), a core methodology for quantification of energy, material, and water footprints. Because materials are technology-enablers, sustainable development will not be possible without the involvement of the materials science research community.
  • John Abelson will examine the methods of the Ashby/Granta group, which are utilized to analyze engineering systems in terms of the distinct contributions to the ecological footprint and to indicate where changes in design or materials can afford significant improvement. First, a streamlined LCA is used to determine the relative importance of materials synthesis, manufacturing, transport, operation, and end-of-life phases. Second, materials selection methodologies are modified to include embodied energy, CO2 footprint and water footprint. Third, tradeoff methods are introduced to provide a framework in which system cost and ecological performance can be optimized given the assumed value of the externalities. The results raise key questions: when does a traditional material that can easily be recycled trump an advanced material for which no recycling route exists?
  • Beginning with the foundation of LCA, the concept of criticality assessment applied to emerging energy technologies will be defined and discussed. The first task is to discuss “emerging” vs. “mature” technologies and how this characteristic evolves in time. Different aspects of supply risk beyond scarcity will be brought into the discussion through examples of regulation and of geopolitical risk (including conflict minerals, international tensions, minerals on tribal lands, and reserves under military control). Alan J. Hurd will illustrate the “Importance” metrics using the DOE Critical Materials Plan and related works, and how these metrics have evolved in time. The tutorial will conclude with careful speculation about the roles of resilience and adaptation in future risk analysis, drawing on the Global Trends 2030 report.

"Three Dimensional Architected Nanostructured Meta-Materials" - the 2014 MRS Fall Meeting Kavli Early Career Award in Nanoscience

Nov 30, 2014 6:30pm ‐ Nov 30, 2014 7:15pm
Creation of extremely strong yet ultra-light materials can be achieved by capitalizing on the hierarchical design of 3-dimensional nano-architectures. Such structural metamaterials exhibit superior thermomechanical properties at extremely low mass densities (lighter than aerogels), making these solid foams ideal for many scientific and technological applications. The dominant deformation mechanisms in such “meta-materials,” where individual constituent size (nanometers to microns) is comparable to the characteristic microstructural length scale of the constituent solid, are essentially unknown. To harness the lucrative properties of 3-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures, it is critical to assess mechanical properties at each relevant scale while capturing the overall structural complexity.

Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience: Nanowires - From Basic Materials Research to Real-World Applications

Nov 30, 2014 7:15pm ‐ Nov 30, 2014 8:00pm

Identification: FE.02

Semiconductor nanowires are "needle"-like nanostructures that have unique materials, electronic and optical properties that render them promising for next-generation applications in fields like optoelectronics, energy systems and life sciences. An intensive and worldwide research effort in the field of nanowires was launched in the late 1990s, about 10 years after the pioneering work by Dr. Hiruma at Hitachi in Japan. In my research group we spent the first five years on fundamental studies of the materials growth and the materials physics of nanowires, especially heterostructure systems, while in parallel also developing novel methods that combined top-down patterning with bottom-up self-assembly, to enable the reproducible fabrication of perfectly ordered nanowire arrays. From around 2005, it became evident that this blue-sky research offered significant advantages and opportunities for various applications, primarily in enabling high-speed and optoelectronics devices by monolithic integration of III–V nanowires with silicon. We have also explored ways in which these nanostructures can be used for energy scavenging and in applications that enable energy conservation.

Materials Science for the Anthropocene

Dec 1, 2014 8:00am ‐ Dec 1, 2014 8:30am

Identification: FF1.01

Civilization on our planet took a sharp turn about 250 years ago, at the beginning of the industrial revolution, and has accelerated on that highway ever since. Arguably, its impact on humankind is equivalent to that of the invention of fire. The enormous consequences of industrial activity, positive and negative, could not have been anticipated then, but the bottom line today is that
per capita global consumption of energy is higher than ever, and demand for materials (relative to the year 1900) has increased by factors of 3 to 6000, depending on the element. Total population as well as those segments of the population doing the consuming, is also increasing. Now we speak (informally, thus far) of the Anthropocene, the first geological epoch in which human activity is deemed to have had an effect on the Earth’s ecosystem. For how much longer can economic growth and demand for goods be sustained, and can the same human ingenuity that started the industrial revolution mitigate its effects?
In this talk I will address the meaning and definition of sustainable development, and explore the space at its intersection with materials science. Every human endeavor should be informed by sustainable development, because none of our material resources are in?nite and only a few sources of energy are sustainable. The most common definition of sustainable development comes from the 1987 Brundtland report, “Our Common Future”, and states that “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” However, this is not a scientific definition, and essentially refers to economic development. Further, it requires that we know, or at least accurately estimate, what the needs of future generations will be. The immediate and direct connections between sustainable development and materials science include ef?cient use of materials, materials life cycle assessment, replacement materials, energy-related materials, and water puri?cation. I will highlight what MRS as a scientific society has been doing in the field of sustainable development, and suggest what future materials scientists should know about this field. From MRS’s activities in sustainable development thus far, we have learned that there is nothing we do as humans to ensure our survival (food, water, materials, shelter, economy, health) that lies outside of its boundaries.

Exploiting Symmetry and Material Nonlinearity in Mechanical Metamaterials: Routing Phonons with Multiple Length Scales

Dec 1, 2014 8:00am ‐ Dec 1, 2014 8:15am

Identification: XX1.01

The manipulation and control of phonons is important scientifically in understanding nonlinear propagation, caustic formation and shock interactions, as well as from a technological standpoint, in applications ranging from sound insulation to ultrasonic imaging and shock dissipation. Unique to the challenge in phonon manipulation lies in the material‘s inherently nonlinear response, such as phonon-phonon scattering as well as amplitude dependent shock propagation; this stems from the intriguing structure of the different materials across multiple length scales, from the atomic to the meso-scale, which gives rise to this rich behavior. Phononic metamaterials (PMM) enables one to access certain exotic propagation behavior, such as super-tunneling, negative refraction and super-absorption, by controlling the wave propagation behavior through deliberate structuring at a particular length scale. Furthermore, dynamic behavior in PMM are exploited typically through affine deformation or elastic instabilities, leading to symmetry changes in the structure and hence in the dispersion behavior. However, we propose that, by harnessing the intrinsic nonlinear responses in materials, (occurring at a particular length scale) together with the structural symmetry at targeted length scales, we can arrive at novel methods of controlling wave propagation behavior. One explicit example of this is in spider silk fibers, whihc possess macroscopically uniaxial symmetry. We theoretically and experimentally observed an indirect hypersonic polarization band gap (30%) and importantly, negative index behavior; we further demonstrated that these properties can be dynamically and reversibily tuned with large amplitude strains (up to ±40%). This is attributed to the interactions between the elastic nonlinearity arising between the multi-scale structure (sub 50 nm) of the spider silk constituents and its uniaxial structure at a different length scale(sub 1um). The origin of this band gap is distinct from common mechanism attributed to scattering or hybridization while the negative index behavior arises from the elastic nonlinearity, pointing the way forward to new methods of generating negative index behavior through nonlinearities. This unprecedented result reveals the major role of multilevel structural organization on elastic energy flow and the influence of nonlinearity in the mechanical behavior.

We develop this design principle further and show that by designing the multiple length scales, governing both the intrinsic materials response as well as the wave propagation in various PMMs through symmetry principles, we are able to control the nonlinear wave propagation characteristics ranging from efficient dissipation of shock waves, dynamically reconfigurable phonon polarizers, lens as well as ultracompact sound isolation. This provides an avenue for designing novel systems with tailored and importantly, functionally optimized properties.
