The surface of a material is very important and dictates its characteristics and behavior. The surface structure of a material governs its surface mechanical properties, including adhesion, friction and surface stiffness. While for bulk materials, microstructure is a critical component of structure, for surfaces, the structure is governed largely by surface topography. The articles in the December 2022 issue of MRS Bulletin cover the latest understanding of structure-properties connections for surfaces. This includes both the theoretical basis for how properties depend on topography, as well as the latest understanding of how surface topography emerges, how to measure and understand topography-dependent properties, and how to engineer surfaces to improve performance.

The talks in this webinar will highlight many of these aspects and will complement the articles in the December 2022 MRS Bulletin issue.
