2014 MRS Spring Meeting

R10.06 - Solar-Rechargeable Wearable Textile Battery

Apr 25, 2014 10:30am ‐ Apr 25, 2014 11:00am

Description

Targeting a variety of applications, considerable progresses have been made for wearable electronics. However, lithium rechargeable batteries do not follow such progresses due to insufficient mechanical stabilities. In this talk, I will present a textile-based lithium rechargeable battery with substantially improved mechanical stability based on unconventional material and structure for each of key cell component (current collector, binder, and separator). The final textile batteries developed for clothes and watchstraps remain fully functional even during severe in-situ folding-unfolding motions (several hundreds folding repetitions per each battery cycle). Furthermore, the final textile full-cell was integrated with flexible and lightweight solar cells on the battery pouch to enable convenient solar-charging capabilities.
