Judy Jeevarajan

Dr. Judy Jeevarajan is a Research Director at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the area of Electrochemical Safety. She has over 23 years of experience in the area of batteries with a primary focus on safety research related to the lithium-ion battery chemistry.

Dr. Jeevarajan serves in the Technical Working Group for standards organizations such as International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Society of Automotive and Aerospace Engineers (SAE), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the United Nations (UN) Informal Working Group (IWG) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). She contributes significantly to the formulation and updates of UL battery standards.  Dr. Jeevarajan is a member of the Energy Advisory Council to the Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University.

Representing UL, Dr. Jeevarajan co-chairs a Battery Safety Council with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Dr. Jeevarajan previously worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC) in Houston, Texas where she was the Group Lead for Battery Safety and Advanced Technology. Dr. Jeevarajan also represented the battery group on all NASA safety panels and led the advanced battery technology work with a special focus on the safety improvements. Before becoming a civil servant at NASA in 2003, she had worked for five years for Lockheed Martin Space Operations, a NASA contractor. 

Dr. Jeevarajan is a published contributor on battery safety. Her initial chapter on Space Battery Safety was published in 2009 and a second focusing on commercial li-ion cell safety was published in January 2014. A third publication, a chapter focused on managing risk by manufacturers of consumer equipment was published in October 2018.

Dr. Jeevarajan has made more than 135 presentations at conferences and has won numerous NASA awards. In August 2019, she won the AIAA Aerospace Power Systems Award and a recognition in April 2020 by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) as one of the leading women in the energy storage and electric vehicle industry followed by another award by IESA in November 2020 as the Woman Leader of the Year 2020 in ESS.

Dr. Jeevarajan earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry (Electrochemistry) from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa (1995) and holds a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame (1991).
