Bob Hettel

Argonne National Laboratory

Robert Hettel is Director of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) Project at the Argonne National Laboratory, a project that will replace the existing 1.1-km circumference APS storage ring with a 4th generation lattice that will have diffraction-limited emittance for multi-keV photons and that will include several state-of-the-art high coherence X-ray beamlines. Hettel comes from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, having 38 years of experience with the design, implementation and operation of accelerator systems, primarily focusing on storage ring light sources. Prior to his accelerator experience he spent 10 years designing detector and data acquisition instrumentation for the high energy physics program at SLAC. He served as Technical Director of the SPEAR3 Upgrade Project, head of the Accelerator Systems Division for the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, Deputy ALD for SLAC Accelerators and Head of SLAC’s Accelerator Research Division.
