Army Research Office

Evan Runnerstrom manages the Army's extramural funding efforts for basic research in Materials Design. The overarching goal of the Materials Design program is to establish new smart materials concepts by pursuing fundamental science that exploits multiple physical and chemical forces at play during directed self-assembly to create stimuli-responsive, multifunctional materials with designer geometries, hierarchical complexity, and the ability to dynamically switch among configurations, thereby enabling the future Warfighter to adapt to any environment or situation. The program supports experimental, theoretical, and computational advances to better design, create, understand, and manipulate novel functional materials from the bottom up. The foundations established here support the realization of 3D metamaterials, reconfigurable optics and electronics, bio-mimetic materials, and multi-functional materials that dynamically respond to their environment.
