Hydrogen, as the most abundant element in the universe, offers the tantalizing promise of virtually limitless, clean, carbon-free energy. The use of hydrogen as a renewable fuel is increasingly considered to be central in the transition to a green economy, as demonstrated by ongoing global RD&D efforts. The May 2024 theme issue of MRS Bulletin addresses the progress made recently to accelerate materials research for the deployment of hydrogen-based green technologies, and the challenges and opportunities related to their large-scale adoption.
